When your first child reaches close to a year of age and begins toddling about, suddenly you realize the whole house needs baby proofing! But once you’ve baby proofed the bathroom, kitchen, and living areas, don’t think you’re all done, yet! When you have small people, there are plenty of hidden worries outside that you should notice also. Don’t worry! Instead, be prepared. How can you make your backyard more safe for childhood play?
Install a Fence
Before long, those beginnings of toddling are going to become full out running, generally with joyous laughter at escaping you. Having a fence sets a hard limit and makes sure nobody escapes the yard. Even the most careful parent can be distracted for a minute, and have a small person wander off. Having a fenced space simply makes this less probable.
Cover Pools and Hot Tubs
A baby can topple and drown in as little as two inches of water, which is terrifying but true. It’s possible for a child to wander away from your side, and if you have a water effect, pool, or hot tub, that statistic becomes exceptionally important. Having a fence around your pool with a locking gate is crucial, if you have made the investment to have a pool. Likewise, there are specialty covers for hot tubs which not only prevent debris from getting inside of them, but also children. A hot tub cover reduces the risk of accidental drowning.
Mowing doesn’t sound like a preventative tip for safety, but it is! Wildlife loves unmown yards, and this includes a lot of biting bugs and other visitors. Ticks, for instance, love long grasses. As they transmit many diseases, including Lyme disease, having fewer of them is a great option! Snakes, also, hate those who mow their lawns. They don’t like the vibration of mowers and won’t build their homes where there is noise. If, however, you don’t mow for a few months, make sure to check the yard for new inhabitants before sending children out. Many, many backyard snakes are great to have around for rodent control. Teach kids to identify those native to your area which you do NOT want to touch.
Your beautiful home is always in need of childproofing, regardless of the age, but you can do it! Your children will prosper in a safer, more peaceful environment. Your peace of mind is worth it!
